Take a Tray!

With all the exciting projects we have planned at the moment we need a lot of plants!

To help ease the amount we spend on planting, we have decided to propagate some of our perennials and biennials, ready to plant in the autumn.

Our new ‘Take a Tray’ scheme allows volunteers to care for a tray of seedlings and grow them until they are big enough to transplant into the nursery beds at our new allotment.

You don’t need a greenhouse, just a sheltered well-lit spot out of direct sunlight where the seedlings can grow. All instructions come with the tray.

If you’d like to take part in the scheme please contact us and our gardening co-ordinator will be in touch.

We’ve got an Allotment!

With rising costs of plants and the volume of plants we need to support our projects, the Oakham In Bloom committee decided to acquire an allotment to grow on seedlings and plug plants to support our year-round planting schemes.

In Spring 2015 we took ownership of a lovely plot on Willow Crescent…

To date, the allotment has been dug over with manure and mushroom compost incorporated, and the plants are now being transplanted.

85 polyanthus have been transplanted to the plot and some lovely Delphiniums from Rutland Horticultural Society will be planted and grown on, together with 45 Verbascums that Maureen Jenkins, one of our ‘Take a Tray’ volunteers, has grown from seed for us.

If you’d like to become an allotment volunteer please contact us.
